DSM2 / DSMX Ground?

Curious as to what the difference is with the GROUND versions of the protocols, and whether they can be readily implemented? Seems that ground RXs aren't compatible, might be a nice addition if possible (I don't have anything that uses it, just have seen the difference specified)
