Really appreciate the responses, thanks.
At the moment I'm trying to make a better Jet Ranger icon, with perspective rather than a flat side view,
The 206 is such a nice heli, it deserves the effort.

Hi Mono !
I was in doubt when I saw your icons, because the Devo7e and Devo10 screens can't display greyscale.
So I tried and saw that, while your icons work, they are displayed in B&W.
So this is how the 206 icon appears on my 7e screen :
Well, it still looks good but not as good as in greyscale.
One of the technique i used is greying out some areas with a b&W cross pattern

I hear you ! It's time consuming indeed. Here's the icon I made for my Sbach:it's extremely time consuming trying to get them to look anything like the original models at this low resolution. Maybe there are techniques that I need to learn.

Khan...
thanks for the feedback and the info,
Although I have used Linux and BSD for ~18 years, I've only used Gimp at a really basic level, so I have much to learn.
It did not occur to me that I am using the wrong approach. Tried another method in the last 206 icon, but I could not see any great difference.
Although, I did see that shades of grey show up depending on how close to black it is. All the while I'm refining an image, I upload it to the Devo 10 to check how it looks. Only if I'm satisfied that it's not shabby, then I'm happy to share it.
I will look for some gimp tutorials, also must look into your suggestion re the pattern, thanks.
rbe2012...
thank you for the encouragement, greatly appreciated.

Well, one useful tool when converting grayscale to B&W images is the "threshold" function. In Photoshop it's available under Image > Adjustments > Threshold. I know GIMP has it too.
Here's how I did the Sbach Icon
1. Find a nice picture of the model on a clear background
2. Magic-wand the outside of the model then invert the selection so as to end up with the outline of the model selected
3. Vectorize this selection
4. Crop and Reduce the Image size to 52x36px (Use Bicubic Sharper resampling option)
5. Apply the Sharpen filter (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen)
6. On a new layer, stroke the vectorized outline, with the pencil tool selected.
7. On the image layer, apply threshold function and tweak the parameter to convenience.
8. Flatten image
9. Using the pencil, work on details and manually create the cross-pattern where needed.
Here's a quick try for a T-28:

Hope this helps !

Sincere thanks for taking the time to provide such detailed info, I really appreciate it and I'm sure others will find it useful also.
In my case, making some icons is one way to contribute to this great community project from which we benefit so much. As scale models are my primary interest, figured that might be the ones to tackle.
Other members have already done some very nice plane and heli ones, but as the saying goes, "you can never have too many icons".

There is a problem showing these bitmaps in the forum. Just download the image locally and you can see what it looks like.
