Icons used in deviation are bitmap, and as I know, it doesn't support transparency.

Actually we do support transparency if you use the ARGB1555 format...

Transparency is no magic and supported from the beginning of deviation. Take a look at this thread: Instructions for making model icons

Sorry for the mistake..

Seeing all the different icons for one single model on different backgrounds make me think it wasn't supported.

It is because only full transparency is supported, i.e. a pixel is whether completely transparent or completely opaque, which makes hard to draw a shadow (or a nice contour for the matter), so some people draw icons that blend into the standard background instead...
